Governance of the system

The management model is based on our Principles of environmental and energy management, on which we base our activity to protect the environment and obtain maximum efficiency in the use of natural resources.

CaixaBank's Principles of environmental and energy management

We perform a transversal environmental and energy management, with specialised teams handling the day-to-day management and working groups assigned to specific projects under the supervision of two senior committees:

  • The Corporate Responsibility and Reputation Committee
  • The Environmental Risk Management Committee

2019-2021 Environmental management plan

At CaixaBank, we regularly track a set of environmental activity indicators that measure the entity's efficiency in terms of consumption and its main impacts.

We also have an environmental management Plan which includes impact reduction objectives based on innovation and efficiency, priority lines of action and initiatives to foster good working practices.

We disclose information on the progress we make towards our objectives in our annual reports and in our environmental statement

Main environmental initiatives

Carbon footprint

Our main goal is to minimise our activity's CO2 emissions, as we have pledged to do under the statement on Climate Change, and offset emissions that emissions that cannot be avoided.

Fight against climate change

01

Calculation of the company's carbon footprint

CaixaBank carries out an annual inventory of the greenhouse emissions (GHG) generated as a result of its corporate activity to calculate its carbon footprint and stablish actions aimed at gradually reducing it

02

Reduction of CO2 emissions

Through implementing technological improvements

03

100% renewable energy power consumption

04

Offsetting unavoided emissions

Both in terms of those from corporate buildings as well as those from the branch network (scope 1, 2 y 3)

We achieve this offsetting through reforestation work and by purchasing carbon credits (recognised by the Verified Carbon Standard) for projects with a positive social and environmental impact.

  • Over the 2009-2020 period, we achieved an 85% reduction in CO2 emissions.
  • We are a carbon neutral entity since 2018.
  • We have tracked our carbon footprint at the Carbon footprint, offsetting and carbon dioxide absorption registry  attached to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
  • At CaixaBank, we have been completing the CDP questionnaire since 2012.

Emissions generated and offset evolution

* Consumption per employee in previous years has been recalculated based on the average headcount for each year (instead of being for the close of the financial year).
