CaixaBank awards the top prize to an application that operates Línea Abierta on smartwatches using voice commands

• The winning application was developed over the 24-hour financial app programming marathon FinApps Party

An application that allows users to operate Línea Abierta, CaixaBank's online banking service, on smartwatches using voice commands has won the 2014 FinApps Party, the app programming marathon organised by CaixaBank in partnership with the US firm Global Payments and Barcelona Digital Centro Tecnológico.

The programmers behind the application, Toni Cañas and Jordi Montornés, claimed the top prize of €4,000, while CaixaBank will now consider including their programme within its range of financial applications.

The second prize of €2,000 went to the team made up of Ricard Delgado, Quim Gual and Josep Oncins, for a smartwatch application that monitors physical activity and health indicators for seniors.

With a number of high quality submissions made at the event, the organisers decided to award three third prizes of €1,000 each. The first of these went to the team comprised of Marc Fernández, Alexey Klochay, Eloi Manuel and Xavi Sánchez, whose augmented reality application helps users to locate their nearest ATMs and interact with se same using smart glasses. The second went to the team made up of Gustavo Giudici and Alejandro Vidal, for their smartwatch application to support payments between individuals via a simple handshake.

Committed to creating new services for wearable devices

More than 120 app developers took part in this year's FinApps Party. The 2014 event was dedicated exclusively to generating new financial services for wearable devices (glasses, watches, wristbands, etc.).

The company LG provided each team with an LG G Watch, to help them programme their applications. However, the teams were able to submit projects for the wearable devices of their choice.

Furthermore, for the first time in its history FinApps Party was held simultaneously in two different cities, Barcelona and Atlanta (United States). The winners of the US event were Scott Hankinson and Brian O'Connor, creators of an application that supports real time online payments.

Fourth edition of the first hackathon aimed at the financial sector

CaixaBank has run the mobile app programming marathon FinApps Party since 2011. The bank was one of the first anywhere in the world to adopt the hackathon format to harness collective intelligence and co-creation in order to drive innovation. It has also been an international pioneer in the development of financial services for wearable technologies, with the launch of the world's first banking application for smartwatches and an application for Google Glass.
